Zach Galifianakis trying to not explode.
Visioneers enjoyed moderate success on the festival film circuit late last year and finally came to dvd a month or two ago. I heard about this film a while back, but didn’t get a chance to watch it until now. I gotta say, wish I hadn’t put it off.
This movie has a lot of odd plot devices, which can be confusing and in times counter-intuitive to the plot itself. Though this can be bothersome at the start of the film, upon further inspection it is clear this indecision and strife only embodies the emotions of the characters themselves and serves to set the mood perfectly for the director’s intended viewing.
Visioneers is by no means a “fun” movie, even with the casting of a top rate comedian such as Galifianakis in the main role. It is however quirky and imaginative. The absurdity of many of the situations presented in the film leads you to chuckle, but other times they result in a head-scratch. By the end of the film however, many of these mysteries are simplified, alleviated, or ignored without causing the audience to feel disappointed.
Many will praise the ending of course, with it’s furious embrace, each of the two characters involved fighting themselves for love. I found it added less value to the film, though, then the scenes taking place within George’s (Galifianakis) home and workplace. I would’ve liked to see more exploration of the husband-wife dynamic between Galifianakis’ character and Judy Greer’s as well as more exploration of the workplace a la Brazil.
Overall, the film has a consistent mood, which I think many directors have problems achieving and I would love to see more of the Drake brothers’ work in the future.
RATING: i’ll probably watch this again some time perhaps.
